Meeting Individual Needs – Equality, Pastoral and SEND

Cambridge Academy for Science and Technology adopts a proactive approach to disability equality and access in all our decisions and activities.

This is a responsibility set out in the Equality Act 2010 and one which Cambridge Academy for Science and Technology takes seriously. We have adopted an organisational approach and ethos to formulating policy and practices which positively promote equality.

The Equality Act 2010 introduced a duty which extends to all protected characteristics – race, disability, sex, age, religion or belief, sexual orientation, pregnancy and maternity and gender reassignment.

At its core are three main elements:

  • the elimination of discrimination and other conduct that is prohibited by the Act
  • the advancement of equality of opportunity between people who share a protected characteristic and people who do not share it
  • to foster good relations across all characteristics – between people who share a protected characteristic and people who do not share it

In practice this includes removing barriers for disabled pupils, parents, members of staff, visitors to the school, local community members and to potential pupils of the future.

When it comes to the pastoral team, there is never a problem too big or too small. At Cambridge Academy for Science and Technology, we support and encourage each other to ensure that every student has a positive learning experience.

Tutors at UTCC ensure they build a positive and supportive relationship with their tutees. The tutor is generally the first person a student would go to if they need guidance or advice. If a little extra support is required tutors can refer to our experienced pastoral team. We encourage a family approach, involving parents and carers. We also have close relationships with local support agencies who we are able to signpost students towards.

Special Educational Needs and Disability

Our dedicated SEND staff develop individual support plans with students and their families to ensure that classroom teachers are informed of the best teaching approaches. Specific support structures for those with local authority education and health care plans for high level needs are thoughtfully designed and delivered. All staff are responsible for safeguarding and are trained to take preventative and practical actions to keep everyone safe.

Physical Access

Cambridge Academy for Science and Technology is a three storey building with a small amount of paved grounds that are fully wheelchair accessible including a lift between floors. Throughout our extensive laboratory and teaching facilities we have adjustable height benches  to ensure equality of access to the curriculum. In the fire exit stairwells we have evacuation chairs and designated trained staff and fire marshals.
